For example, when you walk into a bank, the bank teller is located at a very visible and convenient area for customers. The ideology that the easiest way is the best way is reflected. This ideology links to another; that people are lazy. Since we live in a market-oriented economy, everyone is used to the fact that we must get paid for doing something. For example, if journals were not graded I don't think many students in Engl 237 would do it. Home shopping, credit cards are other examples of laziness in the Canadian culture.

A contradicting ideology would be you have to work hard to get ahead. This can be shown through the Universisty system; you have to take tests, meet requirements, it is like you are constantly having to prove yourself to everyone else. This ideology can be seen in religious ideologies, for example, in Christianity: "you shouldn't get something out of nothing." Another ideology that was reflected is that people have beliefs based on their religion (Figure 2). I have this ideology because in my English 231 and 237 classes, I notice that people always use their religion to support their beliefs or ideologies. I also notice people don't disagree with those people, therefore I was induced with the ideology that people should respect all cultures. Respect is a powerful sign towards other people. This is greatly emphasized by the Bible. "Do unto others as you would like them to do unto you." Religion plays a major role in influencing the way we act, mainly because it teaches us morals and values of human nature. Going to religious schools such as the Catholic system, many of these morals and values are stressed on to the students; in this case, respect others cultures.  Respecting all cultures can be associated with belief; there are many examples that conflict with this. When you look at the KKK and organization like that (Figure 3), people don't respect their beliefs. Here, I'm assuming that the word respect is the same as agree. Is it possible for someone that respects someone else's opinion but not agree with them. Of course but the dominant ideology sees respect as a form of agreeing.

Figure 2 (left & right):  Many ideologies in our culture are formed based on religion text.  For example, the Bible says that you shouldn't get something from nothing...that is why gambling and stuff like that are considered wrong.

Figure 3 (left): Relgion idelogies can also can also be interpreted differently among inividuals with different backgrounds.  For example, the KKK (Klu Klux Klan) believes that the Bibles and therefore God says that the white race is superior as compared to all other races.  This leads to violence and hate in our culture.

A Play with a Title about Drugs "Crackpot."

In the Chinese culture, it is inappropriate to discuss such issues so openly. I think this is because drugs are "bad" as viewed by my culture. In my experience, my parents have taught me about drugs behind closed doors. I think the practices of Chinese culture are very conflicting to the North American culture. I find this very evident in TV programs in North America discussing the issues of drugs. It is very rare to find Chinese programs with similar issues.

I think that the Chinese media has a great influence on my repertoire. Growing up with Chinese programs has a great reflection of my beliefs.

An assumption made above is that the play is about drugs. The term "crackpot" may refer to a pot that is cracked. The play could be about something broken i.e. Hopes, heart etc. On the other hand, in slang "crackpot" refers to a "druggie." I think the assumptions above carries from the fact that we are exposed to the dominant culture where certain words retain to many meanings. The term "bad" could mean bad as in not good or bad as in cool.
